Harlem

Harlem is a very short poem written by Langston Hughes during his life time of 1902-1967. After reading this poem I realized that there wasn't any connection to Harlem. I was under the asumption that the poem would refer to the music and cultural aspectS of Harlem however, It revealed the total opposite. The poem refers to dreams being deferred. In conclusion, what I interpet from this poem is that if you dont put any actions into the things you dream of or desire in life your dream will not come.

" What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode? "
